Holmes County, Ohio Full of Treasures

Many people who visit Holmes County, Ohio know about the World's Largest Amish Settlement, the cheese factories, flea market, etc., but there is so much more.  One place that few people visit is the Victorian House Museum in Millersburg, Ohio.  This home exhibits a Queen Anne style architecture and was featured on the Spring HGTV feature called, "Victorian America".  The home was built by L.H. Brightman, a rich, Cleveland area industrialist.  The home has 28 rooms and combines Victorian architecture with Holmes County Ohio History. The fireplaces are one of the most interesting features, according to Carol Steffey, owner of Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast.  An especially fun time to visit is from November 21 to December 31 when they observe Holidays at the Mansion.  The rooms are decorated for Christmas and it is just beautiful.  The owners of Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast will map out itineraries for their guests of interesting places to visit while staying in Holmes County, including the Victorian House Museum.

Lehmans an Amish Country Icon

Lehmans Hardware is a one-of-a-kind store that is not to be missed when visiting Amish Country according to the owners of Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast.   It all started when owner, Jay Lehman, decided to cater to the local Amish community with non-electric items.  In the early years of Lehmans Hardware the Amish accounted for 95% of the business.   Today it is such a tourist attraction that the Amish business is less than 10%.  There is still a need for non-electric products from missionaries, survivalists, environmentalists, and more.  Hollywood even got in on the picture to purchase items for movies that are authentic to the period of time that the movie is set in.  The Amish don't just get served by Lehmans Hardware but they supply 40-50% of the products that the store sells.  From old stove reproductions to fireplaces to kitchen items to oil lamps to kids toys and more, you will feel like a kid in a toy store when you shop at Lehmans.

Inspirational Quotes Make Great Gifts and Art in Ohio Amish Country

Some the the artwork and decorations at Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast came from P. Graham Dunn Inspirational Gallery in Ohio Amish Country.    Coming from a family of missionaries, Peter Graham Dunn and his wife LeAnna accepted a mission to a home for run away girls in New York City back in 1972.  They taught the girls a woodworking business to keep them out of trouble and they sold their creations at outdoor markets in Greenwich Village, New York.  When the mission was complete they relocated to Dalton, Ohio and started this spectacular store.  You can watch the items being made because the factory and showroom store are at the same location in Dalton, Ohio.  You've probably seen many of their pieces in Christian book stores around the USA.  You will find everything from Christian gifts to art work with inspirational quotes and Bible verses.  There are many styles from a classic look to country to items appropriate for an office.  When visiting Ohio Amish Country this is one place that you won't want to miss!

Museum Worth the Trip in Ohio Amish Country

The owners of Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast like to scout out their area for unique and unusual places to send their guests.   There is one museum in Dover that they refer to as "Ohio's best kept secret" is Warther Museum & Knife Factory.  This museum reflects the carvings or Ernest Mooney Warther who carved the famous steam locomotives from across the USA.  Even if you are not in to trains or carvings you won't want to miss this tour.  It is a narrated tour of the stages of Mr. Warther's life.  They will share with you about his childhood and how he got started in carving.  Each new room that you enter your tour guide will share with you about Mooney's inventions, early carvings that he referred to as "junk trains", to the breathtaking trains made of ebony and ivory.  You will find yourself saying, "how did he do that?"  The museum is attached to a knife factory that Mr. Warther started.  On the weekdays you can view the factory area where they make the knives.  Of course, there is a gift shop where you can buy the knives that are guaranteed for life.  The owner of Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast highly recommends the knives and we have a set at the B&B.  They are open daily from 9-5 p.m.  This is a great Sunday activity if you are in Amish Country for a weekend when many things are closed.  This museum is a place that will appeal to all ages and both men and women.  Check it out!

Holiday Gift Certificate Dilemma

With Sweetest Day, Christmas and Valentines Day coming up many people purchase gift certificates for an over night stay at a bed and breakfast.  There are different types of gift certificates that you should be aware of.  The obvious is that you can purchase a gift certificate directly from 1 bed & breakfast that is valid only at their B&B.  The other option is that there are several bed and breakfast directories that advertise thousands of inns.  They offer gift cards that are valid at "participating" inns.  That is what you need to be aware of when purchasing that type of card.  For example, you may have found a bed & breakfast on, stayed there, loved it, and now you want to buy a gift certificate for your parents for Christmas.  Your parents call your favorite inn, make a reservation, and show up with a gift card.  The only problem is that your favorite inn doesn't participate with the gift card program and now your parents have to pay for their room when they thought that they could use the gift card.  Each of the directories that sell gift cards instruct the recipient to visit their website for a list of "participating" inns.  Many people over look that statement and assume that all inns participate if that advertise on that directory.  You should do your homework as to how many inns participate in the state(s) that you think the person receiving your gift may visit.  The reason that not all inns participate in these programs is that the directories take up to a 30% commission when the gift card is received.  So if you buy a $100 card, the innkeeper charges $100 per night but they only get to keep $70 because the directory keeps $30.  If there is a place that you really like you might consider purchasing a gift certificate directly from the inn and then you know that your gift will be accepted when the person receiving it arrives.

Walnut Creek Builds Covered Bridge, Ohio

For a small town, Walnut Creek, Ohio, is one of my favorite places in Holmes County Amish Country.  They are building a covered bridge between the downtown area and Walnut Creek Cheese.  Those who like to take country drives to see the covered bridges of Ohio will want to make a trip to Walnut Creek, Ohio.  While you are there be sure to visit Walnut Creek Cheese where you will find bulk foods, granola factory, jam & jelly factory, Uncle Mikes Meats, bakery, deli, lunch counter, and of course, cheese.  Coblentz Chocolate Factory is another place you won't want to miss.  You can go in the back room and see chocolates being made, purchase a box or go to the old-fashioned candy counter and build your own!  Carlisle House of Gifts has to be one of the nicest gift shops in the County.  You'll find everything from floral designs, candles, Thomas Kincaid, Christmas decor, garden decor, lace and more.  They have 3 stories so plan on spending a while there.  If you want a scrumptious lunch be sure to stop at Rebecca's Bistro.  She is a gourmet cook and has no menus.  Each day a selection of homemade soups, entree salads, quiches, and sandwiches are prepared.  Her homemade salad dressings are so good that you will want to take some home.  If you just want dessert & specialty coffees you will find that at Rebecca's too.  P.Graham Dunn opened a store next to Carlisle House of Gifts that is an extension of the huge store in Dalton.  Don't miss that either!  There is so much to do in the area that you will want to spend a couple of nights.  Be sure to look up Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast, an award-winning B&B near Berlin...about 7 miles from Walnut Creek.

Pottery in Ohio Amish Country

One thing you wouldn't expect to find in Amish Country are artisans that make pottery, but you will find some great pottery in Holmes County, Ohio.  Holmes County Pottery has Ohio's largest wood fired kiln.  It takes approximately 8 days to load the kiln each time that they want to fire it.  You will find everything from ornaments to coffee mugs, patio pots, lamps and more!  Treaty Line Pottery is owned by Carol Ohl.  Their kiln is also wood-fired and can hold 500 pieces.  It takes 24-40 hours to fire and you will find everything from pots to mugs to bird houses and more.  The Pottery Niche has North Central Ohio's largest selection of imported Polish Pottery.  Each piece is unique and beautiful colors.  Many stores, such as Lehman's Hardware, also carry a variety of pottery.  Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast will post on their Calendar of Events when the kilns are being fired at the local pottery places so that guests can come to the kiln opening sale.  They will also map out directions for a cultural tour of other area artisans such as Bowden Bells.  The next time you visit Holmes County Amish Country be sure to check out Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast and the other exciting things to see and do!
