Ohio Bed and Breakfast Welcomes Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration

Take a step back in time this 4th of July weekend with an Ohio bed and breakfast.  Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast in Millersburg, Ohio is known for their evening campfires.  Each evening when the Amish Country shops and attractions close they light a campfire for guests to gather round and share their daily adventures.  They always have marshmallows on hand to roast and on holiday weekends let guests make s'mores.  Another holiday weekend treat is that Herb, one of the owners, bakes a cobbler in a dutch oven over the open campfire for guests to snack on.  This year, Historic Downtown Millersburg is hosting an Old Fashioned 4th of July celebration on Saturday, July 3rd.  Throughout the day they will have games, food, entertainment and at 9:45 p.m. a huge fireworks display.  One of the special events this year is that the Historical Society has discovered the original Courthouse blueprints and they are going to offer tours of the Millersburg Courthouse.  One of the highlights of the tour is the mural painted on the ceiling in the Court Room.  History buffs will really enjoy a pictorial history of Millersburg as well.  Your bed and breakfast hosts will provide you with information on all of the special events in Amish Country for the 4th of July weekend.  Call 330-674-7608 for reservation or visit their website at www.garden-gate.com

Could Your Holmes County Ohio Vacation be Haunted?

The next time you visit Holmes County Ohio be sure to check out the Victorian House Museum in Millersburg.  Many people are aware that this historical home completed in 1902 by L.H. Brightman, a Cleveland industrialist, was featured on HGTV.  What you don't know is that it is reportedly haunted.  The Central Ohio Paranormal Research Group recently spent the night in the Victorian House and found it to be one of the most haunted places they have ever been in.  If you click on the link above you can hear some of the recordings that they took as well as see some pictures from inside the Victorian House Museum.  Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast offers a tour to their guests of Ohio's 1st State Road.  You start with a 1 hour tour of this museum and then take an escorted tour on Port Washington Road.  You will see cemetaries, historical sites, and some of the most beautiful scenery that you have ever seen as you travel and learn the history of the 1st State Road.  "If you are leary of running in to a ghost don't worry", said Carol Steffey, owner of Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast, "I've toured the home about 4 times and never had any haunted experiences."  It is said that television's Ghost Hunters show may be paying a visit to the Victorian House Museum in Millersburg, Ohio.  So whether you like Victorian homes, history, or are fascinated by haunted places be sure to visit.  Garden Gate Get-A-Way B&B is an Ohio bed and breakfast that has received multiple awards.  Owners, Herb & Carol, will be happy to make tour reservations or map our directions for you to visit the Victorian House Museum.

Bird Watching Vacation Ideas in June

If you're planning a bird watching vacation this June don't overlook Amish country Ohio.   From the Rails to Trails path to nature preserves there are plenty of places to go bird watching including special events.  The owners of Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast have several places that they like to send their guests.  One special event is June 26, 2010.  It is a romantic, moonlight serenade at The Wilderness Center in Wilmot.  This is a fundraiser where nature lovers will receive a couple of tickets for wine while they stroll around a moonlit and lantern-lit path around the lake.  Various music ensembles will be around the property to serenade you.   You'll hear classical guitar, cello, violin, woodwinds and more.  Picnic baskets will be for sale from a local catering company to enjoy with your wine.  Your innkeepers can help you with directions and tickets.   Throughout June you will find bird walks and wilderness walks with Naturalists who know the trails.   Another place to go birding is The Ohio State University's Secrest Arboretum.  Over the past 100 years, Secrest has grown into an outdoor laboratory and education display garden, strengthening the relationship between people and plants with research-based knowledge.  Today, continuing development meets the rising needs and trends of the citizens of Ohio and beyond.   Rails to Trails is another place to see a variety of birds from water birds in the Killbuck Marsh area to Ohio wild birds further north.  The Holmes County Rails to Trails is deemed to be the only section of this National trail where there is an Amish buggy/horse lane and a hiker/biker lane.  Bird watching is a major hobby in the Amish community and visitors to the area will find many bird supplies from binoculars to books to birdhouses.  When you make your bed and breakfast reservations be sure to consult your innkeeper about special birding events in the area.

Amish Country Vacation Ohio Should Include Certain Attractions

Your Amish Country vacation Ohio gives you many options from museums, to animal ranches, shopping, antiques, cheese factories, chocolate factories, etc.  There are some "must see" attractions according to the innkeepers at Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast.  One of Carol's favorite places is Wendell August Forge in Berlin.  The artisans make handcrafted items from metal including personalized gifts.  No matter what your taste in decor they seem to have something for everyone.  It is one of the few places where you can shop and find items made in the USA.   There are only 2 locations in the USA and one is right here in Berlin, Ohio.  Both Herb & Carol name Warther Museum as their favorite attraction in Amish Country.  Mooney Warther only had a 2nd grade education but is was deemed a World Master Carver and the museum tour takes you on a tour of the stages of his life.  It is a narrated tour and you really feel like you get to know Mr. Warther by the time the tour ends.    Behalt, a mural at the Amish & Mennonite Heritage Center, depicts the history of this culture.  It is one of four cycloramas in North America and is distinguished by the fact that only one artist completed it.  The colors and art work are something you won't want to miss.  Bowden Bells is another favorite of the Steffeys.  You will find bells, birdbaths, yard art and more, all hand crafted by Vince Bowden from recycled materials.  You just never know what you will find.   Carol is a big animal lover and highly recommends Rolling Ridge Ranch.  Guests will board a wagon drawn by Belgian work horses and get the opportunity to see over 500 animals from around the world including 100 species.  They also have a petting area and picnic area.  These are just a few of the favorites of the bed and breakfast owners, but they will be glad to sit down with you and help you plan your Amish Country visit when you check-in.
