Ohio Bed and Breakfast Owners Celebrate 10 Year Anniversary

Situated on a rolling hill, in the middle of the Worlds Largest Amish Community, is an Ohio bed and breakfast, Garden Gate Get-A-Way B&B, that is celebrating their 10 year anniversary.  Herb and Carol Steffey, left the corporate life in Michigan and decided to purchase a bed and breakfast near Berlin, Ohio.  The home was being operated as a 4-room Inn and they converted it to a bed and breakfast.  In the past 10 years there have been vast improvements to the property;

  • A room with a Jacuzzi and fireplace was added on
  • The Breakfast Room was remodeled
  • 2 Cottages were built on the same property as the B&B
  • 2 guest rooms were remodeled with a more updated decor
  • The gardens were extended
  • A new roof was put on the house/B&B
  • A Tour Bus was purchased to offer guests Amish Culture Tours and Wine Tasting Tours
One of the things that is most important to Herb and Carol is the level of customer service that is offered at Garden Gate Get-A-Way. They want every guest to have a great experience not only at their property but in the area.  They will map out itineraries to visit the kinds of places that you want to visit or you can purchase a tour on their bus to get the escorted, educational kind of visit.  One of the guest favorite things at this Amish Country Ohio bed and breakfast is the evening campfire.  When all of the shops and restaurants have closed guests gather at the fire ring in the middle of the gardens to unwind and visit with other guests.  In addition to lodging the Steffeys offer Murder Mystery Weekends, Wine Tasting Weekends, Dinner with an Author Packages, and Musical Entertainment packages.  For more information about this multi-award winning bed and breakfast call 330-674-7608 or visit their website at www.garden-gate.com.

Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen, a Favorite Restaurant of Amish Country Inn

Guests at our Amish Country Inn often ask for dinner recommendations when visiting Holmes County, Ohio.  Our favorite Amish-style restaurant in the area is Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen.  The restaurant is located in Mt. Hope, Ohio at the corner of State Route 241 and County Road 77.  When we visit it seems that many guests choose the Broasted Chicken, but there are many selections on the dinner menu from Wedding Steak to Pot Roast to a Grilled Pork Chop to Teriyaki Salmon.  You will want to choose the salad bar as one of our side dish choices.  It offers more than just a tossed salad.  There are local favorites like broccoli-cauliflower salad or broccoli-peanut salad to jello salads and bean salads.  There are several side dishes to choose from including real mashed potatoes, cheesy potluck potatoes, locally made noodles, and more.  The hardest part for us is to save room for dessert because the entree portions are so hearty.  The homemade pies at Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen are out of this world.  They have seasonal favorites such as fresh peach pie and blueberry cream pie as well.  There is also a Date Cake that is similar to the Date Nut Pudding served at many Amish gatherings.  The cake is like a spice cake with whipped cream and caramel sauce.  You definitely want to try this dessert or take some home.  You won't be disappointed when you visit Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen for a meal.

If autumn makes you start thinking about Ohio weekend getaways then mark your calendar for Apple Butter Stirring at Yoders Amish Home & Farm. When you enter Holmes County, Ohio you will see beautiful fall colors and that Amish families are harvesting crops and gardens.   Mark your calendar for October 6, 13, or 20, 2012 for some old fashioned apple butter stirring as well.  The Yoder family gets out their 30 gallon copper kettle and puts in on the open fire early in the morning as they begin to make apple butter.  You can even take a turn stirring the apple butter and try a sample.  This festival goes on all day.  While you are at the farm you may take a guided tour of a couple of  Amish homes on the property, go on an Amish buggy ride, visit the barn and see animals wandering around the property.  They also have a 1-room schoolhouse where you can learn more about Amish education.  Yoder's Amish Home & Farm is located at 6050 State Route 515 between Walnut Creek, Ohio and US 62 (between Berlin and Winesburg).

Amish Country Ohio Bed and Breakfast Recommends Chocolate Tasting Event

Just down the road from our Amish Country, Ohio bed and breakfast you will find Coblentz Chocolate Company in Walnut Creek.  Their 25th anniversary is coming up and they have a special chocolate tasting event to celebrate on September 14, 2012.  If you want to attend you must purchase a ticket in advance to attend the tasting at 6:30 p.m.  We have attended in past years and it was like being in Willie Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.  When we first walked in, everything that Coblentz makes was available to taste.  I went for things that I had never tried before like their Sea Salt Caramels and Key Lime Truffles.  After doing some tasting they gave me a hair net and I got to go in the chocolate factory itself.  They had several stations set up to make your own chocolates.  One year we dipped caramel covered pretzel sticks in chocolate and the next year we dipped apples.  Another station we got to choose things like peanut butter-filled Ritz Crackers or Oreo cookies and send them through the machine that covers them in chocolate.  There was a section that the kids loved to make "fruit kabobs" from gummy candies.  Everything that you make you get to take home with you.  You may taste as much as you like while you are there but if you want to take any chocolates home you must purchase them.  The 2012 event costs $15 and you can contact Coblentz Chocolate Company to purchase them.

Visit Ashery Country Store on your next Amish Country Vacation in Ohio

On your next Amish Country vacation in Ohio you will want to visit Ashery Country Store.  It is one of the most popular bulk food stores in the area.  They carry deli meats, cheese, pasta, candy, baked goods, sips, cookies & snacks, soup mixes, baking items, spices, dried fruits, jam, and so much more.  The locals say, "If you cannot find the spice you are looking for at Ashery then you are not going to find it".
In the 1960's this store was located in an Amish neighbor's basement.  In the 1970's it moved to the current location and has had several renovations since.  The name, Ashery, came from a soap making factory which used to be located across the street from the current location.  The soap consisted of lye and ashes, hence the name Ashery.  The original owner passed away in 2004 and today Ashery Country Store is run by his son, Curt Yoder.
If you visit this store on Saturday, September 8, 2012, they will be honoring Grandparents.  You will receive 3% off of your purchase that day plus a free ice cream bar in honor of grandparents everywhere.
The Ashery Country Store is located on State Route 241 just north of Mt. Hope, Ohio.
