No Sex, No Kids, No Money

Can you imagine living in a community where you were told no sex, no kids, no money/income?  There is such a community in Ohio.  In 1817 a group of German people settled in Zoar, Ohio.  They moved to the USA seeking religious freedom and avoiding the religious persecution in their own Country.  They set up as a community that many today would consider a commune.  Houses were numbered and each family was assigned to a house.  Each day the men would gather and were assigned jobs and any income earned was pooled by the community, not in their own pocket.  At one point these Germans got a contract to work on the Erie Canal.  In order to get the contract done early and earn a bonus they wanted the women to work on it as well.  As a result their children were put in a dormitory during the week and didn't live at home.  Sex was "banned" in marriage so that no new babies would be born while they needed the women to work on the Erie Canal.  For 80 years this group of Separatists lived in this commune-like setting.  The tour of this village is quite fascinating.  You will visit the dairy, the blacksmith, the bakery, the greenhouse, and more.  There are restaurants in town so you can make a day or afternoon of your visit.  They open for the season on April 5, 2014.  They are even open on Sunday afternoon which makes a great follow up to your weekend getaway in Holmes County, Amish Country.

Amish Driving Lessons in Holmes County

At our bed and breakfast guests often inform us while they were driving around Holmes County, Ohio, they saw Amish people in a car.  They are shocked because they have always known the Amish to travel by horse & buggy.  So here is your Amish driving lesson for the day:

  1. The Amish of Holmes County, Ohio are allowed to hire a driver to transport them where they need to go.  This is mainly the Old Order and New Order as you will not see the Swartzentruber Amish in a car.  They mainly hire drivers for getting to work, doctor appointments, and out of State weddings and funerals.
  2. Amish young adults going through Rumspringa are allowed to get a drivers license and drive a car until they are baptized and officially join the Amish church.
  3. The Amish of Holmes County, Ohio are not allowed to own a car/truck unless they are in their Rumspringa.
So there you have it . . . you are not going crazy when you see an Amish person in a car in Holmes County, Ohio.

One on One With an Amish Family

Many of the guests that stay at Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast do so because they are interested in learning more about Amish culture and customs. They have heard that Holmes County and the surrounding area is home to the world's largest Amish community.  On very special option for these guests is to experience dinner with an Amish family.  The B&B has a couple of Amish neighbors that cook exclusively for their B&B.  Unlike the local tour company that will send a motor coach full of guests to an Amish home for dinner where it feels more like a restaurant, this bed and breakfast may just send 2 guests to eat with their Amish neighbors.  Keep in mind that the Amish don't have cars to run out to the grocery store at the last minute for baking supplies so you should allow at least one week notice before requesting this experience.  The menu consists of homemade bread and salad, followed by meat, potatoes, noodles, vegetable, beverage and dessert.  The Amish dinner is served family-style so you will not walk away hungry.  You can make dinner reservations at the same time that you book your guest room.

A Tea That A Man Will Love

When ladies go on vacation something that catches their eye is a tea room.  You go inside, the decor is adorable, you eat tiny little tea sandwiches or quiches, and sip tea.  If your husband is with you that is the last thing that he wants to do on vacation!  We're going to change that . . . we have a tea package that a man could love.  Garden Gate Get-A-Way Bed & Breakfast has 3 dates where the tea is held in an historical home and the package includes a tour of another home next door that has been turned in to a museum.
The actual tea and museum tour are on Saturday afternoon so there is also free time over the weekend for the guys to do more "manly" things.  The tea takes place at Castle Club which is the former Lessie Lee home.  After the tea you go next door for the Victorian House Museum tour.  The architecture is something that your man will find fascinating, especially the fireplaces.  The home/museum has been featured on HGTV but it's more recent claim to fame is that Ohio's Paranormal Research group has deemed this home one of the most haunted places in Ohio.  So grab your guy and come on over to Holmes County Amish Country and have some tea for two.
