Heinis Cheese Chalet is a Favorite Stop in Berlin Ohio

Ask the bed and breakfast guests what their favorite cheese factory in Ohio Amish Country is and the first answer you will hear is, "Heinis Cheese".  Heinis is known as the cheese factory to visit when you want to watch cheese being made but they also have samples sitting out where guests can choose from about 50 varieties of cheese!  Something you may not have known is that Heinis Cheese has been in the family since 1935 and that there is a history as a master cheesemaker in Switzerland that led to this family purchasing what was origianally called Bunker Hill Cheese.  If you have never driven around to the back of the store/factory then you don't know that Amish farmers provide milk to make the cheese and it comes to the factory in old fashioned milk cans.  All of the Heinis brand cheese are made in Berlin, Ohio.  When you visit their factory/store in Berlin, Ohio, you will see that they also have a gift shop, coffee shop, homemade fudge, candy, and more!  One helpful hint is that cheese making is always done in the morning.  Thus if you want to watch it being made it is best to make them your first stop.  By the time lunch time rolls around the vats have been cleaned and you won't see any cheese making.

The Confession Musical Returns to Ohio Amish Country

If you follow the Amish you have probably read books by the award-winning author, Beverly Lewis.  She wrote a book call The Confession.  The story is based on an Amish girl who finds out she is adopted.  To complicate the situation even further her birth mother is "English", not Amish.  The young woman sets out on a trip to find her birth mother.  Meanwhile the birth mother is dying and is trying to find the daughter she gave up so many years ago.  You may find it hard to believe but this play is a musical comedy!  This musical was adapted from the book by the woman who used to write jokes for Bob Hope and Phyllis Diller and that is how such a serious story line becomes a comedy.  We've seen this musical multiple times and men seem to love it as much as women do.  The Confession will be playing at the Carlisle Theater in Sugarcreek, Ohio.  It runs from June 3 - August 16, 2014.  Afternoon matinees and evening performances are offered but this is a very popular show and tickets should be purchased in advance.

Plan More Than 1 Day When Visiting Ohio Amish Country

Bed and Breakfast owners near Ohio Amish Country often are asked, "Is there enough to do there if I spend a night?".  The usual answer to that question is "Give us one week and we will send you some where different every day".  Most tourists concentrate in the Holmes County area where you will find the world's largest Amish community, fine gifts, flea markets, animal ranches, museums, historical homes, cheese factories, chocolate factory and more.  If you stay in Holmes County and use it as your hub there are so many other activities.  The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is an hour and a half drive north.  The Pro Football Hall of Fame is just a 45 minute drive away.  The famous Columbus Zoo is only one and a half hours south.  If you are visiting the area in 2014 there area 3 places that you can tour with "One Golden Ticket" and save some money.  Those places are the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum, Historic Schoenbrunn Village, and the Uhrichsville Clay Museum.  The Dennison depot served coffee and a sandwiches to service men during WWII.    Schoenbrunn Village became the first white settlement in the area during the American Revolution.  The Moravian Missionaries lived among the Delaware Native Americans.  Uhrichsville became famous when the Clay Industry moved through the nation and was king over 32 manufacturing plants.  These 3 sites are within a 10 minute drive of each other.  So as you can see you will need more than 1 day to see this part of Ohio.

Atwood Lake is a Great Sunday Activity Near Ohio Amish Country

Many people are hesitant to visit Ohio Amish Country on weekends or to stay over on a Sunday night because many area businesses are closed on Sundays.  Just a short ride from Holmes County Amish Country is Atwood Lake.  They are part of the Muskingum Watershed and offer a serene place to eat, sail, and swim.  From the West Marina you can pick up a boat ride on the Atwood Queen on the weekends.  The pontoon boat ride lasts about 1.5 hours and can even be rented for parties with catering.  If you would like a longer ride they rent pontoon boats that you can take out on the lake by the hour or by the day.  While you are there be sure to stop by the Lighthouse Bistro for a meal.  The food is excellent and they give you a choice of eating inside the restaurant or out on the patio facing the lake.

On the way to Atwood Lake from Amish Country you will pass through Zoar, Ohio.  It is an historic town where German Separatists settled.  You can take a tour of the buildings in Zoar from the dairy to the bakery to the blacksmith to the greenhouse and more.

While there are a variety of Sunday activities near Amish Country, Atwood Lake is a favorite of ours.
